In my previous article we've discussed Top 5 transfers of the season. Now it's time to have a look at the Top 5 flop transfers of the season. It was very difficult to pick only 5 when there were many flop transfers, especially in the Premier league. After so much of reckoning we've sorted out top 5 flop transfers of the season.
5. Ciro Immobile
After his impressive season with AS Roma, Jurgen Klopp bought him to Signal Iduna Park for 19.4 million euros. He had big shoes of Robert Lewandoski to fill in, who at the end of the season joined Bundesliga champions and Dortmund's direct rivals Bayern Munich on free transfer. But Ciro failed to make the mark, he came in as a substitute for most of the matches and just managed to score 7 goals and provide an assist. He played a total of 30 matches with 1359 minutes. They somehow managed to secure there place in Europa league courtesy to the place in the final of DFB Pokal.
4. Mario Balotelli And Adam Lallana
Super Mario joined Liverpool after having a decent season with A.C Milan for 16 million pounds. Just like Ciro, this lad also had to fill in big shoes, much bigger than what Immoble had to filled, because Uruguayan star striker had joined FC Barcelona. Suarez was the protagonist in finishing Liverpool second in the EPL. They very well might have won the league if it wasn't for Steven Gerrard's infamous slip against the 'Special One' Jose Mourinho's team. Balotelli was very poor on the pitch, off the pitch he always has been the talking point. Balotelli played 21 matches and could manage only 3 goals this season. He's been one of the biggest reason for Liverpool's poor show in all the competitions.
Adam Lallana was bought from Southampton for 25 million pounds. He played total of 33 matches with 2130 minutes and scored 6 goals and provided 3 assists being an attacking midfielder. He also has been equally responsible for Liverpool's bad run.
3. Angel Di Maria
Angel Di Maria would probably wouldn't have made in our countdown if he wasn't British record transfer. Di maria joined EPL giant Manchester United from the mighty 'Real Madrid' due to the wages issues. He joined Man Utd for a record 59.4 million pounds. He kicked off the season in style but faded away with time. Still he's been the top assist provider and also created most chances for Man Utd, injuries also played major part in making his season worse. Di maria has played 1825 minutes and a total of 29 matches providing 10 assists and scoring 4 goals
2. Eliaquim Mangala
Eliaquim Mangala joined last season's EPL champions Manchester City for 31.8 million pounds from FC Porto. First of all Man City were very much criticized because of paying such hefty amount for a center back who's not proven, though he has potential to become a good defender. He has been very poor for City, perhaps he didn't adjust well to the physicality of the EPL. Mangala has played 2459 minutes and a total of 28 matches, collecting 4 yellow and 1 red card. He has cost City few matches which saw them out of title race. He seemed hesitant, also hasn't been very good in air or in intercepting or in tackling. He averages 1.7 tackles per match and 1.6 interceptions per match and his clearance average has been 5.8 and also an own goal. These stats look very average, at this point of time it looks like pure waste of money. Only time will tell if he's worth the money paid for him.
1. Radamel Falcao
Radamel Falcao was a deadline day transfer, an year loan deal from AS Monaco. The point that matters here is his wages, his wage bills were in the league of Cristiano and Messi, 300k euros per week! There were lot of expectations from him, since he's one of the best striker currently around. Things didn't go as planned, after first few matches Falcao was seen warming the bench or coming on in the dying minutes of the match for most of the times. Sometimes he wasn't even named in the match squad. He even played the matches with reserves. He played 23 matches with 938 minutes on the pitch, scoring 4 goals and assisting 4 times.
Special Mentions
Dejan Lovren, Juan Cuadrado, Lucas Silva, Enzo Perez, Guillermo Ochoa, Alesso Circi, Guilherme Siqueira, Alvaro Negredo
